Vancouver Island University, Cowichan Campus wins the 2013 Green Roof Award of Excellence for it’s intensive green roof!

Special recognition to Marina and Lisa for outstanding design work and coordination. CONGRATULATIONS to the entire design team including Joseph Daly, Landscape Architect, who provided contract management as well as Garyali Architects, Paradise Cityscapes green roof contractor, and facilities management at Vancouver Island University. Great team work for a challenging project!

“It was an outstanding experience working with the champions of green building design at Vancouver Island University and Garyali Architects. Honouring the traditions of the Cowichan Tribes, we created a three dimensional living laboratory that is a feast for the senses. Visually stunning, the dynamic sloping and terraced decks support six types of green roofs integrated with classrooms and covered programmable spaces. Fragrant meadow flowers, grasses, hedgerows and climbers replicate the endangered Garry Oak savannah ecosystem. Students harvest salad greens, beans on cables, herbs and strawberries for lunch, and for studies in urban agriculture and sustainable design.” – Randy Sharp
