This recently completed mixed-use development is a stand out in the ever changing Southeast False Creek neighbourhood. With an eight story ‘skybridge’ set atop two, fifteen story commercial and residential blocks, the development breaks the mold of the typical Vancouver residential tower.
The skybridge is supported by a forest of stylized architectural columns that ground and define the building. This atypical architectural approach allows landscape to play a prominent role with a generous sized street level courtyard accessible to both residents and the public. The focal point of the space is a 25,000 sq ft water feature with wooden platforms that float above the water to create spaces for people to gather, sit, and enjoy the outdoors. Other elements in the courtyard include custom wood and concrete seating, public art, and thoughtful planting, which combine to create an overall design that is both functional and impressive in day and night.
The Central also takes advantage of panoramic views of False Creek, Downtown, and the North Shore Mountains. A series of rooftop garden terraces feature plots for urban agriculture, a children’s playground, semi-private gathering areas, and extensive green roofs, exemplifying how Sharp & Diamond continues to integrate sustainable practices into the built environment.
